REVIEW By Marcus Blake
Have you ever wondered where podcasting started? What was the Genesis of the podcast? As someone who started with podcasting in early 2009, I didn’t know where it all began. I just knew that there was this thing called a Podcast or internet radio so to speak, that’s what we used to call it, but a podcast is its own thing. Shaun Michael Colon takes us into the origins of the podcast with his new film “Age of Audio.” The film is not only a love letter to podcasters, but the evolution of podcasting to where big business got involved and you could actually make a living doing it. Podcasting is its own unique art form and a great way for ordinary people to create a discussion format that can be heard by thousands of listeners. Famous celebrities and personalities have gotten into it and made a career. But this is such a fantastic film that shows where it all began…how the technology evolved. It feels like you’re watching this really informative school documentary or after-school special about this great art form.
For someone like me who started with a political podcast and then started That Nerd Show In 2012 as just a simple nerd ad pop culture podcast, I found this film incredibly fascinating not only from the information that I’ve learned, but for how it was presented. The film doesn’t have a narrator, it has a host. The film itself is a podcast… what a unique way to make a film, a documentary style podcast. This is one of the best documentaries you’re going to watch and if you’re lucky to be in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, then have a chance to see its World premiere at the Oak Cliff Film Festival. The film features great interviews with Ira Glass, Kevin Smith, Marc Maron, and many more who have taken this art form from an amateur style discussion into the mainstream. Just like talk radio became popular, there’s so many great personalities that have made podcasting Just as popular and a fabric of society. A podcast may take different shapes and sizes, but with the internet and the ability to broadcast without having a traditional radio antenna, the sky is the limit. You can start your own media outlet with a podcast. This is a great film and tells a unique story in the format of a podcast even though it’s a film. My only complaint, not getting the ear to full interviews and maybe one day we will. I encourage you to check it out. 8/10
