Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the best superhero movie of 2026! I know what you’re going to say, Avengers: Doomsday hasn’t even come out yet…well, I can pretty much guarantee this will still be the best superhero movie of 2026. Here’s why! The Spider-Man movies have always done well. They are some of the best written stories in the MCU and that was even more evident with Spider-Man: No Way Home, which was a clever way to help introduce the multiverse and bring all the Spider-Man’s together. It was the best movie of Phase 4 and 5. It also happened to be the most tragic because of Peter Parker losing his Aunt May and having Doctor Strange cast a spell so nobody would remember him including his love, MJ, in order to save the world. It’s where we really got to see Peter Parker make a hero’s sacrifice and that carries over to this film set four years later where nobody knows him. He’s just Spider-Man trying to save the city and the only contact that he has with his friends is watching their Instagram videos while they’re in college. We get a lonely hero trying to stay away and protect those he loves, and who’s only real purpose is keeping New York safe. Peter Parker is not a boy anymore and has come to understand the sacrifices that a superhero has to make which leads to his biggest battle since Avengers Endgame. There’s a lot of reasons to love this movie, if nothing else because we are encountering a very different Peter Parker who is going through a metamorphosis of sorts with his arachnid DNA. Also, he’s having to come to terms with his decisions because he does end up connecting with Ned and MJ again. But at the same time, we get introduced to bigger and more powerful villains or should I say misunderstood villains as Peter is forced to re-examine who the real villain might be.
The action is great in this movie, but Spider-Man movies have always had some of the best action and they’re not really dark and moody with the color tones where it’s obvious that they’re CGI… not every Marvel movie can say that. It also helps that this movie doesn’t try to do too much. It focuses on its main hero despite the fact that there are other characters. I love the fact that the Punisher is introduced in this movie which if you know the comics there’s a lot of history between Frank Castle and Peter Parker. But my favorite part and this is what makes the movie great, there’s a lot of gray when it comes to the villain and like I said, Peter is forced to re-examine who the true villain is in this story. This is not really a spoiler at this point because of the internet and it’s not hard to figure out, but yes, Sadie Sink is playing a young Jean Gray…this is Phoenix before she joins the X-Men. This is her coming to terms with her powers and using them to seek revenge. You understand her reasons and we have a character that is young and hasn’t truly been accepted by a larger superhero group where she has shown love and respect, and how to use for powers for good. She is shown as a villain, but is she the true villain and that’s what this movie helps to answer. She will be the third version of Jean Gray that we’ve seen on the big screen and she nails it. I’ve loved the other two for various reasons, but getting a very young and inexperienced Jean Gray for the next phases of Marvel is great. It’s also a good way to tease new X-Men, which we all know is coming. There’s a lot to enjoy with this film. The story is not convoluted and it’s easy to follow, plus the performance is are great. Tom Holland has really come into his own playing Spider-Man and this film reminds me of the early Marvel movies that had standalone stories which were leading to something bigger. And it’s always nice to have Frank Castle as The Punisher. I admit that I’m always going to be a huge fan of Thomas Jane’s portrayal as the Punisher, but Jon Berthnal has really become my favorite because as fans we’ve had the opportunity to spend more time with him as the Punisher especially as he plays a type of superhero big brother for Spider-Man. It would be great to see him within the larger universe and helping the Avengers. Hopefully that will happen.
There’s not much to complain about when it comes to Spider-Man: Brand New Day and the continuation of this Peter Parker’s story. However, if I have one main criticism It’s how they used Bruce Banner / the Hulk in the movie. He’s a legacy character and while I understand the need for the way they used him to drive the plot since he’s really just a side character in a Spider-Man story, I think there’s a lot more that they could have done with him especially with added scenes of Peter Parker and Bruce Banner talking about his metamorphosis. Plus we never really get a follow up with Bruce Banner at the end of the movie. I mean is he going to be okay? I’m sure he will because it’s not like the Hulk won’t return for the next Avengers movies, but using one of the bigger characters in such a small way doesn’t help the story. It’s great when he’s there, it’s great when he interacts with Jean Gray, but I think there should have been a bigger role for him in this movie even though it’s all about Spider-Man. The Hulk’s role feels more like a glorified cameo and sometimes you need that, but I expected more with such a bigger character. And my other big criticism, sorry if this is a bit of a spoiler especially when it comes to the end of credits scene, but there is a very big missed opportunity to introduce Jean Gray joining the X-Men…I guess they’re saving that for the Avengers movies. However, these criticisms do not take away from this being the best superhero movie of the year and one of the best over the last 6 years. I find it interesting that the two best Marvel movies since Endgame are both Spider-Man movies.
What’s the verdict? Go see this movie. It is meant to be seen on the big screen and it is not a waste of a ticket. The two best movies to see on the big screen this summer are Spider-Man Brand New Day and The Odyssey…both with Tom Holland. And I have to admit, Tom Holland is quickly becoming my favorite Peter Parker. I still love Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield; the three of them together still makes an almost perfect movie while at the same time making the multiverse fun. The new Spider-Man doesn’t try to do too much, the story is clear and concise, plus the pacing is great. It’s a Marvel movie the way they used to be before everything became too convoluted and the stories were derivative. The movie does say that Spider-Man will return and I can’t wait for more adventures with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man because these have become some of the best movies in the Marvel Universe. Zendaya is not my favorite MJ, but with each movie she grows on me and I really like her in this movie. This is her best performance…It’s more dramatic and more heartfelt because she doesn’t remember Peter, but knows there’s a connection. Now if you’re going to ask me the most heartwarming scene in the movie…having Marisa Tormei come back as Aunt May through memories especially when she’s consoling one of the most important characters in the movie…you will just have to watch and see. This is one of the best cameos ever in the MCU and not at all wasted because it brings heart to the story and in a lot of ways provides the moral centerpiece for the main characters. Lastly, this movie is definitely “nerd approved!”
